Even within Southeast Asia, the distribution of wealth and the availability of resources from one country to another is strikingly clear. I forgot how much better the food is in Thailand, how its 7-11’s would be seen as luxury stories in its neighboring countries, and today I experienced its clean modern hospitals. After all these months, the ways of Bangkok, which I formerly loathed, seem comforting and inviting. I even welcome the taxi drivers here because they’re much more regulated and do not harass me as much as the ones in Vietnam. For some reason, I don’t stand out as a tourist here. And if someone doesn’t speak English, they immediately lead me to someone who does. The kindness of Thais can make any foreigner feel at home.
